Our Curriculum

At Mount Burr Primary School, we provide a balanced curriculum across all eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. We deliver strong programs in English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, and Technologies, supporting every student to build essential knowledge, capabilities and dispositions for lifelong learning. Staff consistently stive for excellence in teaching and learning, seeking opportunities to continually learn and improve practice.

Our school’s open learning spaces and multi-age classrooms provide flexible and collaborative environments where students learn from and with each other. Teachers use a range of evidence-based teaching strategies, including explicit instruction, guided practice, and open-ended inquiry, to cater for diverse learning needs and styles.

Literacy and Numeracy is a priority, with evidence-based teaching in reading, writing, phonics and the Big Idea in Number, ensuring all students achieve growth.

Our teaching focuses on developing confident, capable learners. Through our “SECRET (Self Manager, Engaged Citizen, Critical and Creative Thinker, Reflective, Explorer, Team Player) Learner Powers,” students are explicitly taught how to learn, reflect on their progress, and use feedback to improve. We promote a shared language of learning and a culture of high-quality “beautiful work.”

Students learn Japanese across the school in partnership with Millicent High School, and our close connection with Preschool supports a smooth transition into school.

We offer rich, hands-on learning experiences that connect to real-world contexts. Our approach to learning is strengthened through Expeditionary Learning, where students engage in authentic, purposeful projects connected to community and industry. These experiences enable students to work with experts, present their learning to authentic audiences, and develop a deep sense of meaning and pride in their work. Opportunities such as environmental programs, including Young Environmental Leaders, Walking the Seasons, and March in May, further connect students to their local context and promote active citizenship.

The Arts are highly valued, with specialist teaching supporting creativity and expression. Our open learning spaces and multi-age classrooms allow for flexible, collaborative learning, with teachers using a range of strategies to meet diverse needs.

We value strong partnerships with families and provide a variety of opportunities to engage in and celebrate student learning.

Through our “SECRET Learner Powers”, students are explicitly taught how to learn, reflect on their progress, and use feedback to improve.
